Dear All,

It is currently the peak season for chickenpox. All students, faculty, and staff are reminded to closely monitor their health and practice proper self-care. If you experience symptoms such as fever, body aches, red rashes, or blister-like spots, please seek medical attention immediately and refrain from attending classes or work. You may return to campus only after all blisters have completely scabbed and you are confirmed to be non-contagious.

For the safety of our campus and to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, we kindly ask for everyone’s cooperation.

About Chickenpox

  1. Symptoms:
In the early stage (1–2 days before rashes appear), patients may experience mild fever (37.5–39°C), fatigue, loss of appetite, headache, and muscle or joint pain. This is followed by the appearance of red rashes, which then develop into papules, vesicles, pustules, and eventually scabs. The rash usually begins on the face and scalp, spreading to the trunk and limbs. Complete recovery typically takes 2–4 weeks.

  2. High contagion:
    Household transmission rates exceed 85%.

  3. Seasonal prevalence:
Most common in winter and early spring.

  4. Transmission routes:

    • Direct contact with skin lesions

    • Airborne droplets or aerosols

    • Contact with vesicle fluid or contaminated objects
      Note: Scabs are not contagious.

  5. Incubation period:
10–21 days; peak onset is usually 14–16 days after exposure.

  6. Period of contagion:
Infectiousness begins up to 5 days before rash onset (usually 1–2 days prior), and continues until all lesions have dried and scabbed. Contagion is strongest in the period just before rash onset.

  7. Susceptibility and immunity:
Anyone who has never had chickenpox is susceptible. Reinfection is rare. After initial infection, the virus may remain dormant and later reappear as shingles.

  8. Prevention:

    • Vaccination is the most effective prevention. The live attenuated varicella vaccine provides immunity in about 95% of recipients, lasting at least 7 years. Even if infection occurs post-vaccination, symptoms are generally milder.

    • Non-immune individuals should consult a physician about receiving the vaccine.

If symptoms of infection appear, wear a mask, cover exposed skin (long sleeves/pants), and seek medical attention promptly. Confirmed cases must not attend classes or work until lesions have completely scabbed and a physician has confirmed no longer infectious, with a medical certificate provided.

  1. Close Contacts:

    • Should maintain good personal and environmental hygiene.

    • Practice self-health monitoring for 21 days after the last contact with the infected individual.

    • Normal school/work attendance is permitted, but if symptoms appear, wear a mask, cover exposed skin, and seek medical care immediately.

    • Post-exposure prophylaxis: Individuals without varicella immunity may receive the vaccine within 72 hours of exposure (up to 5 days for ~70% protection, and later for reduced but still protective effect). Vaccination must be evaluated by a physician to rule out contraindications.
